A yard, as distinct from an enclosed warehouse, is an open or semi-covered area at a terminal, port, or distribution hub where freight – containers, pallets, breakbulk – is held short-term, consolidated, and staged for onward movement. Freight forwarders and terminal operators use the yard as an interchange point between transport modes: a sea container discharged from a vessel waits here until a truck or rail wagon takes over. Dwell time is typically short; extended storage moves to off-dock facilities or warehouses where land costs are lower. Not to be confused with a container yard, which is purpose-built for ISO container handling.
