When a logistics operation runs short of drivers during peak season or an understaffed dispatch team misses shipments after a period of growth, the absence of structured workforce planning is immediately felt. Workforce planning is the systematic process of forecasting future staffing needs—by headcount, skill set, and timing—and aligning labor supply through measures such as recruitment, training, and shift design. It draws on shipment volumes, seasonal patterns, and growth targets as well as turnover rates and competency profiles. Unlike operational shift scheduling, which allocates staff in the short term, workforce planning operates on a horizon of quarters and years. Well-executed, it reduces labor costs, prevents service failures, and delivers more stable working conditions.
