Wharfage is a fee charged by a port authority or terminal operator for the use of quay and cargo-handling space, assessed independently of whether goods are actually loaded or discharged during a vessel call. It is typically calculated per ton or per container unit and compensates the operator for maintaining the physical infrastructure of the berth and apron area. Wharfage differs from dockage, which is a time-based charge related to how long a vessel occupies a berth, and from ancillary service fees such as crane hire or container storage. In freight invoicing, it commonly appears as a distinct line item and should be factored into landed cost calculations for sea freight shipments.
