> Freight forwarders, shippers, and customs authorities rely on weight verification to confirm that the measured weight of a shipment matches the figures declared in transport documents.

Freight forwarders, shippers, and customs authorities rely on weight verification to confirm that the measured weight of a shipment matches the figures declared in transport documents. Accurate weight data underpins freight charge calculation, compliance with statutory axle load and gross vehicle weight limits in road transport, and adherence to broader safety requirements. Verification may be carried out at the shipper's premises, upon carrier intake, or at customs checkpoints. In ocean freight, the SOLAS convention requires a verified gross mass (VGM) for fully loaded containers before they may be loaded onto a vessel—a rule enforced by terminal operators worldwide. Discrepancies between declared and actual weight can trigger surcharges, shipment holds, or regulatory penalties.
