Crucially, the reduced rate applies to the full shipment weight—not only to the portion above the break. Typical breakpoints fall at 100 kg, 500 kg, or 1 tonne, though carriers define their own scales by mode and trade lane. Forwarders and shippers routinely assess whether consolidating smaller shipments to reach the next weight break produces meaningful cost savings. Weight breaks should not be confused with chargeable weight, which compares actual and volumetric weight and bills whichever is greater.
