Unlike a bill of lading, a waybill is not a negotiable instrument: it grants the named consignee a direct right to delivery without the document itself needing to be endorsed or physically transferred. As the operational document accompanying a shipment, it records the goods description, weight, origin, destination, consignor, and consignee in binding form. The applicable format varies by mode of transport: road freight uses the CMR consignment note, rail the CIM waybill, and air freight the Air Waybill (AWB). Freight forwarders, carriers, and consignees all rely on it as a handover record, control reference, and proof of dispatch. For customs purposes, it serves as evidence of the goods movement and the underlying contractual relationship, and is frequently a mandatory component of the customs declaration.
