A truck driver tipping used engine oil into a standard container on the depot yard is already in breach of multiple regulations – that is how strictly waste oil disposal is governed. Waste oil is used mineral or synthetic oil from engines, gearboxes, or hydraulic systems and is classified as hazardous waste. Collection, transport, and subsequent recovery or elimination are subject to national environmental legislation; ADR regulations apply to road transport, and the Basel Convention governs transboundary shipments. Only licensed disposal companies may accept and process waste oil – either by re-refining it into base oil or through energy recovery. Freight forwarders and logistics operators must ensure a complete and unbroken documentation chain and are prohibited from mixing waste oil with general waste streams.
