The method divides storage space into functional zones defined by measurable criteria such as turnover frequency, product weight, temperature requirements, or hazard classification. Fast-moving A-items are placed in ergonomically favourable positions close to the dispatch area, while slow movers and bulky goods are assigned to more remote locations. This reduces picking travel times, lowers error rates, and cuts handling costs. Unlike basic zone planning, warehouse segmentation links the physical layout directly to differentiated putaway and retrieval rules within the WMS, so the system automatically directs stock to the correct zone.
