The system manages bin locations in real time, optimises storage and pick sequences, and automatically passes shipping data to transport management or ERP systems. Unlike a general-purpose ERP, a WMS is purpose-built for the spatial and operational control of material flow, accounting for aisle configurations, storage categories, and access priorities. In large distribution centres, it is typically integrated directly with conveyor systems, barcode scanners, and mobile devices. A standalone WMS should not be confused with a basic inventory module inside an ERP—it offers significantly greater depth for complex warehouse operations.
