A warehouse inventory is the systematic recording of all physically held stock at a defined point in time, documented by quantity, value, and—depending on the sector—batch numbers, serial numbers, or expiry dates. It verifies actual stock levels against system records, uncovers losses from shrinkage or damage, and provides the evidential base for financial and statutory accounting. Large distribution centres increasingly rely on cycle counting, where sections of the warehouse are counted on a rotating schedule to avoid costly shutdowns. A full physical count at a fixed date, however, remains a legal requirement or standard practice in many jurisdictions. The inventory process itself should not be confused with a stock discrepancy, which is the result of comparing counted stock against system data.
