A Vertical Lift Module (VLM) is an automated storage and retrieval system in which bins or trays are densely stacked in two facing vertical columns and delivered on demand to an ergonomic picking window by an integrated extractor. By exploiting full ceiling height, a VLM sharply reduces floor space compared with conventional shelving and cuts pick times because goods travel to the operator. Most units interface directly with a Warehouse Management System (WMS), enabling order-directed, inventory-accurate retrieval. Unlike a vertical carousel, the extractor moves straight to the requested bin without cycling through intermediate levels. VLMs are common in spare-parts logistics, pharmaceuticals, and any environment combining high pick frequency with limited floor space.
