The US–Chile Free Trade Agreement, in force since 2004, delivers tariff elimination and reciprocal market access as its core benefit for bilateral trade. It removes or reduces import duties on a wide range of goods—agricultural products, wine, minerals, and machinery among them—and extends to services trade, investment protection, and intellectual property rights. Preferential rates are not granted automatically: freight forwarders and importers must comply with the agreement's rules of origin and keep the required origin documentation on file, as customs authorities on either side may request proof at any time. The FTA offers a stable legal framework for US–Chile transactions, but the compliance burden rests squarely with the parties involved.
