Upstream consolidation reduces freight costs by combining shipments from multiple suppliers at a central collection point before they move on as a single full-truckload or full-container shipment. A freight forwarder or 3PL typically manages the consolidation hub, collecting smaller parcels or part loads and merging them into economically viable consignments. The model is most effective when individual supplier volumes are too small to justify direct full-load transport. Beyond cost savings, it smooths inbound delivery schedules and cuts handling steps at the receiving facility. Unlike consolidation at a distribution center, the bundling takes place earlier in the supply chain, closer to the point of origin.
