A pallet arrives at the distribution centre, the scanner reads the barcode, and the warehouse management system instantly identifies the product, manufacturer, and trade unit: that is the UPC (Universal Product Code) in action. The UPC is a 12-digit barcode that uniquely identifies a retail product and enables automated data capture at every stage of the supply chain – from manufacturer through wholesalers and retailers to returns processing. Developed in North America, it remains the dominant scanning standard there. Internationally it is often compared with the EAN code (European Article Number, 13 digits), which encompasses the UPC as a subset; both are unified under the GS1 standard. For logistics operators and warehouse service providers, accurate UPC capture is a prerequisite for automated inventory management, shortage analysis, and smooth handoffs to retail partners.
