A forklift moves into position, cranes begin their cycle – what follows is discharge: the systematic removal of cargo from a vessel, truck, railcar, or container at the destination or a transhipment point. In maritime shipping, the term specifically describes unloading a seagoing vessel and is clearly distinct from loading operations. Depending on cargo type and terminal setup, discharge is carried out manually, with mechanical handling equipment, conveyor systems, or automated gantry cranes. Delays trigger demurrage or detention charges, making efficient sequencing a priority for freight forwarders and terminal operators alike. The term is also applied more broadly to road and rail unloading, though its primary association remains with sea freight.
