The universal container standard consolidates these technical specifications, principally through the ISO 668 series and related international norms. Standardized 20-foot (TEU) and 40-foot (FEU) units can be loaded onto any compatible container vessel, automatically stacked at terminal facilities, and transferred to road trailers or rail wagons without modification. Freight forwarders, shipping lines, and terminal operators base their entire cost calculations—from freight rates to crane capacity—on these standard dimensions. Tank containers and specialized units for hazardous goods are governed by additional standards beyond ISO 668.
