Unlike item-level weighing, unit load weight control measures already-assembled transport units – pallets, containers, coils, or cage pallets – as a single entity, providing the basis for all weight-related regulations in freight transport. Carried out immediately before loading, it ensures compliance with permissible axle loads for road vehicles and the maximum gross mass requirements for sea containers, which must be declared as Verified Gross Mass (VGM) under the SOLAS Convention. Carriers and freight forwarders use this control to avoid traffic fines, liability exposure, and transport damage caused by overloading. In air freight, the result feeds directly into the aircraft's weight-and-balance calculation. For sea freight, a missing or incorrect VGM declaration can lead to the shipping line refusing to load the container.
