Unlike handling individual packages, a unit load consolidates multiple items or packages into a mechanically stable, standardized assembly that is moved as a single entity. Typical forms include flat pallets (EUR pallet 1200 × 800 mm), industrial pallets (1200 × 1000 mm), containers, and swap bodies. Consolidating cargo this way enables mechanical handling with forklifts or cranes, cuts breakage rates, and substantially lowers per-shipment handling costs. Unit loads are the standard format in general cargo and container shipping, and they also streamline inventory tracking, warehouse organization, and customs clearance. Not to be confused with consumer or trade packaging, which refers to the immediate packaging layer of an individual product.
