Before cargo is loaded, an empty container inspection determines whether the unit is fit for purpose – and after discharge, it establishes the condition in which the box was returned. Inspectors examine the structure for dents, cracks, and distortions, and check for contamination, moisture ingress, foreign odours, and the integrity of door seals and certification plates. Findings are recorded in a Container Inspection Report, which becomes key evidence in liability disputes between shipper, freight forwarder, and carrier. For dangerous goods, foodstuffs, and pharmaceutical shipments, customs authorities and consignees frequently require a documented inspection as a condition of clearance or acceptance. Defects missed before loading can result in cargo rejection at destination or protracted insurance claims.
