During air freight operations, the ULD tare weight appears at a very practical moment: when ground handlers weigh a loaded unit and need to determine the actual net cargo weight. Tare weight is the empty weight of a Unit Load Device—container or pallet including standard fittings such as nets, locks, and base structures—with no cargo loaded. It is measured when the ULD enters service, stamped directly onto the unit, and recorded in the airline's ULD inventory system. Subtracting the tare weight from the gross weighed weight yields the net cargo weight used for the air waybill, weight manifest, and freight charges. Any discrepancy between the stamped tare and the actual empty weight may indicate damage or unauthorised modification and must be reported as a safety issue.
