ULD pooling is a cooperative fleet model in which multiple airlines or logistics providers share a common stock of Unit Load Devices—the containers and pallets used to consolidate air cargo—rather than each carrier purchasing and managing its own equipment. A neutral third-party operator typically runs the pool, handling procurement, maintenance, and redistribution of units to wherever demand exists. The arrangement reduces capital expenditure for each participant and limits costly repositioning: fewer ULDs sit idle at one station while another faces a shortage. Pooling is distinct from bilateral interline interchange agreements, which link only two carriers without centralised fleet oversight. For smaller freight carriers, pool membership also provides access to a larger device inventory without the upfront investment of owning a dedicated fleet.
