When a shipper books a consignment of dense, heavy goods — machine parts, canned food, construction materials — the twenty-foot standard container is often the natural choice: it offers around 33 cubic metres of usable space and is typically the right unit when the weight limit is reached before the volume runs out. Standardised under ISO 668 with an external length of 6.058 metres, it is fully compatible with all modern handling equipment and stacking systems. In shipping statistics, it defines the base unit: one TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) equals exactly one such container, and all larger units — including the 40' container at two TEUs — are derived from this measure. For smaller shipments and heavier cargo, the 20' container is more cost-effective than its larger counterpart, as ocean freight rates, handling charges, and terminal fees are spread across a more compact unit.
