# Trump Tariffs Canada

> As of July 2026.

As of July 2026. Since June 2025 the United States has imposed a 50% Section 232 tariff on steel and aluminium imports from Canada; copper followed in 2025, also at 50%, and passenger cars at 25%. This makes Canada—despite being a close USMCA partner—one of the most heavily affected economies. President Trump had originally, in 2025, also imposed "fentanyl- and border-related" tariffs on Canada based on the emergency-powers statute IEEPA; these lapsed on 24 February 2026 after the US Supreme Court ruled the IEEPA tariffs unlawful (see IEEPA, reciprocal tariffs). They were temporarily replaced by a 10% Section 122 surcharge (an increase to the statutory maximum of 15% announced for 22 February 2026 was never implemented by legal order, so the operative rate remains 10%); the US Court of International Trade (CIT) held it unlawful on 7 May 2026, the Court of Appeals (CAFC) stayed enforcement on 12 May 2026, so CBP continues to collect it for now—it expires by its terms around 24 July 2026. USMCA-compliant goods remain largely duty-free; the scheduled joint review of the agreement (CUSMA review) began on 1 July 2026, and Canada formally requested a 16-year renewal on 1 June 2026. The Section 232 tariffs on metals, autos, lumber (10% since Oct 2025) and furniture (25%) continue unchanged, as they were unaffected by the IEEPA ruling; the proclamation of 1 June 2026 gave partial relief to Canadian makers of agricultural and construction equipment and certain HVAC systems. Canada responded with its own 25% counter-tariffs on certain US goods. Not to be confused with the fentanyl tariffs or the China-specific rates; on multiple charges see tariff stacking.
