Unlike a dispatcher or co-driver, the truck driver bears direct, personal responsibility for safe vehicle operation, proper cargo securing, and full compliance with applicable regulations – covering driving hours and rest periods, tachograph use, and weight limits. Entry into the profession requires a recognised Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), renewed through periodic training at regular intervals. Daily duties include pre-trip vehicle checks, route execution, and communication with shippers and consignees. On international runs, drivers additionally handle customs clearance and transport documents such as the CMR consignment note or TIR Carnet. The persistent shortage of qualified drivers across European markets remains a structural constraint on road freight capacity.
