The transshipment process serves a clear purpose: keeping freight moving wherever a single transport mode reaches its limits or where groupage consignments need consolidation. It covers the complete operational sequence by which goods or cargo units are transferred at an intermediate node from one means of transport to another – including capacity planning, coordination among the freight forwarder, terminal operator and carrier, physical handling, load securing and documentation. Damage claims arise disproportionately often at transshipment points, which makes standardised handling procedures and clear contractual liability arrangements between all parties essential. Not to be confused with port transshipment in the narrower sense, which refers to cargo moved directly between vessels without entering the local distribution network.
