> A transport order is a written or electronic instruction by which a shipper assigns the movement of goods to a carrier or freight forwarder.

A transport order is a written or electronic instruction by which a shipper assigns the movement of goods to a carrier or freight forwarder. It establishes the contractual basis for the shipment and must specify key details such as pickup and delivery locations, time windows, weight, volume, and any special handling requirements. In day-to-day freight operations, transport orders are typically fed into a Transport Management System (TMS), where they serve as the source document for generating consignment notes, loading lists, and delivery notifications. The transport order is not the same as the waybill or bill of lading – those are the actual carriage documents issued once the shipment is accepted; the transport order precedes them.
