A Transport Management System (TMS) is a software platform for planning, executing, and optimising freight movements across the supply chain. Freight forwarders, logistics service providers, and shippers use a TMS to compute efficient routes, determine freight costs, and track shipments in real time. The system accounts for variables such as vehicle capacity, driver hours regulations, and – in cross-border operations – customs documentation requirements. Most modern TMS solutions integrate with ERP platforms and warehouse management systems (WMS) through standardised APIs, enabling automated data exchange. Unlike a WMS, which governs internal warehouse operations, a TMS is concerned with freight flows between locations.
