# Transit Guarantee

> A transit guarantee is a financial security that the principal – typically the freight forwarder or shipper – must lodge with the customs authority before a customs transit procedure can be opened.

A transit guarantee is a financial security that the principal – typically the freight forwarder or shipper – must lodge with the customs authority before a customs transit procedure can be opened. It covers the potential customs debt that arises if goods do not reach the declared office of destination or the procedure is not properly discharged. Two main forms exist: the individual guarantee, which covers a single transit movement, and the comprehensive guarantee, which spans multiple concurrent procedures and offers a significant administrative advantage for operators who move goods frequently under transit. Authorised Economic Operators (AEO) may, under certain conditions, apply for a reduced guarantee amount or a full waiver. The guarantee is released by the office of departure once correct discharge of the procedure has been confirmed.
