Freight forwarders and customs authorities rely on the transit accompanying document (TAD) to move goods under customs supervision across one or more countries without requiring full clearance at every border point. It records the shipper and consignee details, a description of the goods, customs declaration data, and transit reference numbers that keep the entire operation traceable. In the EU, the TAD is generated electronically through the New Computerised Transit System (NCTS) and travels with the shipment in printed form. It confirms that the goods remain under customs bond: duties are either settled at the office of destination or secured by a financial guarantee lodged in advance. The TAD is specific to the common transit procedure and should not be confused with the TIR carnet, which operates under a separate international guarantee scheme.
