Unlike general cargo securing – which also covers vehicle bodies and vessel holds – load securing in containers specifically addresses how freight is distributed and fastened inside the steel box. Correctly secured cargo withstands the forces generated by heavy seas, rail braking, and stack loads; poorly secured goods shift, topple, or damage the container structure itself. Training courses cover weight distribution, centre-of-gravity calculations, and the use of securing equipment such as lashing straps, anti-slip mats, dunnage bags, and timber blocks. The governing standards include the CTU Code developed jointly by IMO, ILO, and UNECE. Inadequate securing leads to cargo claims, customs inspections, and, at worst, serious transport accidents.
