A train path is the infrastructure-approved combination of track sections, directions of travel, and time slots that entitles a specific train to operate within the rail network at a given time. Unlike an abstract route or corridor, the train path has a temporal dimension: it does not simply describe the connection between Hamburg and Cologne, but the precise occupation of that route on a specific day and at a specific time. Infrastructure managers plan train paths through the annual capacity allocation process to distribute limited network capacity between passenger and freight services and to prevent conflicts between trains. Rail operators and freight forwarders apply for train paths to secure predictable, legally binding access to the network. Not to be confused with the rail slot, which denotes the formal right to use the train path.
