Separating cargo capacity from engine power is the core principle behind the trailer: it allows traction units and load-carrying equipment to be deployed independently. A trailer is an unpowered vehicle towed by a truck, available in configurations ranging from flatbeds and curtainsiders to enclosed box bodies, classified by axle count and maximum gross weight. In road freight operations, trailers can be pre-loaded at the shipper's premises and swapped quickly at the tractor unit, reducing idle time and improving asset utilisation. A full trailer is supported by its own axles at both ends and connects via a drawbar – distinguishing it clearly from a semi-trailer, which rests on a fifth-wheel coupling and depends on the tractor to carry its front end.
