It is measured in both physical units—tonnes, cubic metres, pieces—and monetary terms, making it a dual-dimension indicator. Statistical offices, customs authorities, and economic research bodies use trade volume data to monitor trading activity, assess transport capacity requirements, and identify economic trends. For freight forwarders, the metric informs mode-of-transport planning and load factor analysis. It should not be confused with trade value, which is expressed solely in monetary terms and serves as the basis for customs duty calculation.
