Collection is largely automated through on-board units, GNSS tracking, or licence plate recognition, with national toll operators managing the underlying infrastructure. At the end of each billing cycle, the carrier receives a consolidated invoice used for internal cost allocation and pass-through billing to clients. Carriers operating across borders face a patchwork of national schemes: tariff structures, vehicle categories, and billing intervals differ considerably from one country to the next. Toll accounting should be distinguished from toll collection itself—the former is the administrative and financial process, the latter the technical act of charging the fee.
