Terminal pickup is the collection of a shipment directly at a carrier's, shipping line's, or terminal operator's handling or storage facility, bypassing any onward delivery to the consignee's address. From the moment of collection, the consignee or their authorised representative assumes full transport responsibility for the onward leg. In sea freight this is a standard procedure: the consignee typically requires a released transport document – a telex release or original bill of lading – plus a valid delivery order issued by the carrier or terminal operator. Terminal pickup should not be confused with customs presentation at a port; it refers strictly to the physical handover of cargo. The primary advantage is eliminating last-mile delivery charges, which makes it particularly attractive for high-volume shipments.
