Terminal operators rely on a Terminal Operating System (TOS) to plan, execute, and monitor every operational process at a container port, intermodal rail terminal, or logistics hub. It controls gate movements, yard activities, and quayside operations; tracks containers in real time; and schedules cranes, yard tractors, and staff. The primary objective is to maximise throughput while minimising vessel turnaround times and handling costs. Through standardised interfaces, a TOS exchanges cargo manifests, customs release messages, and status updates with carrier systems, freight forwarder platforms, and government authorities. Unlike a basic warehouse management system, a TOS models the full terminal logic—from a vessel's pre-arrival notice to the departure of the last truck.
