When an export container arrives at the terminal, it passes through a defined sequence of operations: gate-in processing, yard placement, crane lifts, stowage planning, and final loading onto the vessel. The Terminal Handling Charge (Export), or THC (Export), covers all these steps and is billed by the terminal operator to the shipper or freight forwarder, separate from the ocean freight rate. On rate sheets and invoices, it typically appears as a distinct surcharge rather than part of the base freight. Under Incoterms rules, which party bears the THC depends on the agreed trade term – under FOB, for example, it generally falls to the seller. The export THC is distinct from the import THC levied at the destination port and from the transshipment THC applied when containers are relayed at an intermediate hub.
