When a shipping line evaluates a new port call or a logistics provider selects a transshipment hub, terminal capacity is a central decision criterion. It defines the maximum volume of cargo – containers, bulk, or vessels – that a terminal can handle per unit of time under normal operating conditions, typically expressed as an annual figure. Capacity is determined by quay length and berth availability, the number and performance of handling equipment (ship-to-shore cranes, reach stackers, forklifts), storage area, and staffing levels. Exceeding capacity limits causes congestion, extended dwell times, and higher costs across the supply chain. Terminal capacity differs from terminal utilization: capacity is the theoretical ceiling, utilization the actual share of that ceiling being used.
