Customs declarants and importers bringing goods into the European Union routinely work with the ten-digit tariff number, known as the TARIC code. It combines the eight-digit Combined Nomenclature (CN) code with two additional digits that encode EU-wide measures such as anti-dumping duties, preferential rates, or import suspensions. Every customs declaration must carry the correct TARIC number: it governs the applicable duty rate, the basis for import VAT, licensing obligations, and the activation of trade policy measures. The TARIC database is maintained and continuously updated by the European Commission. For exports leaving the EU, the eight-digit CN code is generally sufficient.
