> Temporary storage is the short-term holding of goods under customs supervision after they have entered a customs territory but before a customs declaration has been lodged and a customs procedure assigned.

Temporary storage is the short-term holding of goods under customs supervision after they have entered a customs territory but before a customs declaration has been lodged and a customs procedure assigned. Under EU customs law, it is a precisely defined legal status: non-Union goods may remain in approved facilities for a limited period without yet being placed under a definitive customs procedure. If the permitted duration is exceeded, customs authorities may assign the goods to a procedure ex officio. In day-to-day freight operations, temporary storage arises most frequently in sea and air freight, where the physical arrival of a shipment and the availability of complete documentation often do not coincide. It should not be confused with the customs warehousing procedure, which is a formally authorised arrangement carrying distinct rights and obligations.
