It is used for perishable foods, pharmaceuticals, biologics, and temperature-sensitive chemicals where even minor fluctuations can compromise quality, potency, or regulatory compliance. Common variants include deep-freeze cold stores, GDP-compliant pharmaceutical warehouses, and controlled-atmosphere facilities for fresh produce. Operating costs are considerably higher than for ambient warehousing, which is why these capacities are reserved for high-value or regulated cargo. Temperature-controlled storage should not be confused with passive insulation solutions such as cool boxes or thermal blankets, which provide no active regulation of internal conditions.
