A company signs a twelve-month import contract, and two months later new punitive duties come into force, rendering the original cost calculation obsolete. That is tariff risk: the financial exposure arising when customs duties, import levies, or tariff-related surcharges change unexpectedly and invalidate existing pricing assumptions. Typical triggers include the entry into force or expiry of trade agreements, unilateral duty increases, anti-dumping measures, and reclassifications in the customs tariff schedule. Importers, freight forwarders, and procurement teams working with fixed cost plans are most affected. Unlike currency risk, tariff risk is politically driven and largely unhedgeable through financial instruments – it is best managed through continuous monitoring, contractual duty-variation clauses, and proactive use of preferential tariff schemes.
