Tare is the empty weight of all packaging, pallets, containers, and transport equipment surrounding a consignment. Freight forwarders and customs brokers subtract it from the gross weight to arrive at the net weight—the commodity mass on its own. Bills of lading, packing lists, and customs declarations must state tare separately so that authorities can verify the basis for duty calculation and consignees can confirm the actual goods quantity. On intermodal containers, the tare weight is stencilled directly on the unit. Net weight and tare always add up to the declared gross weight—any discrepancy signals a documentation error that may delay clearance.
