Tank wagons are the standard rail solution for bulk transport of liquids and liquefied gases – from petroleum products and chemicals to food-grade substances. The wagon consists of a cylindrical or ellipsoidal pressure-resistant tank permanently fixed to a rail underframe, with dedicated inlet and outlet connections. Dangerous goods must comply with RID (Regulations concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail). A single wagon typically holds between 30 and 100 cubic metres, making tank wagons highly cost-effective for large-volume flows compared to intermediate bulk containers or tank containers. Unlike tank containers, tank wagons are inseparable from their underframe and cannot be transferred between transport modes.
