Port terminal operators rely on straddle carriers to move ISO containers swiftly across the yard without depending on fixed crane installations. The machine straddles the container with its wide U-shaped chassis, locks onto the four corner castings via a spreader from above, and lifts the box clear of the ground. It then drives the suspended container directly to the target position and sets it down — typically stacking up to three units high. Compared to rail-mounted gantry cranes, the straddle carrier offers considerably greater layout flexibility; compared to reach stackers, its wider wheel stance provides better stability in dense stacking operations.
