When an ocean container is discharged at the quayside, a straddle carrier typically takes over for onward movement across the terminal yard. The self-propelled vehicle straddles the container between its four vertical legs, lifts it clear of the ground, and deposits it at the target stack – without any crane involvement. Depending on the model, straddle carriers can stack two to four containers high and travel at speeds considerably faster than conventional forklifts. Compared to automated guided vehicles (AGVs), they offer greater flexibility across open yard areas, though they require trained operators and carry higher maintenance demands.
