The STF value (Standard Hand Force) of a lashing strap specifies the pre-tension a single operator generates with one stroke of the ratchet tensioner, expressed in dekanewtons (daN). It is the critical input for calculating the effective tie-down force applied to cargo and underpins load securing calculations in accordance with EN 12195-2. Shippers and freight forwarders use the STF value alongside the maximum securing load (MSL) and breaking strength (LC) to determine how many straps are needed for a given cargo weight and securing direction. The STF value must not be confused with breaking strength: it describes the working pre-tension achieved during operation, not the strap's ultimate load limit.
