When a freight forwarder is tasked with moving an oversized industrial press across several countries, standard haulage simply is not an option—this is where special transport begins. Special transport covers the movement of goods that exceed statutory limits for width, height, length, or weight and therefore cannot be carried on conventional road vehicles. Equipment is matched to the specific load: lowbed trailers, extendable flatbeds, or self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) are the most common choices. Route surveys assessing bridge load ratings, mandatory police escorts, and permits from the relevant transport authorities are typically required before the journey can begin. Costs are calculated on a project basis and can far exceed conventional freight rates; no standard price list applies.
