Special cargo insurance differs from standard cargo policies in that it is specifically designed for shipments with elevated or unusual risk profiles—perishables, artworks, pharmaceuticals, hazardous materials, or temperature-sensitive goods. Rather than applying general policy terms, the insurer individually assesses the cargo type, packaging, transport mode, and route before issuing a bespoke policy with a corresponding premium. Freight forwarders and importers use this cover to close liability gaps that standard policies leave open, such as breakage of fragile items, cold-chain failures, or destruction ordered by customs or health authorities. It should not be confused with the carrier's statutory liability under CMR or similar conventions, which is subject to per-kilogram caps and is considerably narrower in scope.
