A container ship is moored at a busy terminal: reefer units demand continuous power, accommodation systems run round the clock, and without an external supply the auxiliary engines burn diesel for the entire port call. Shore power eliminates that dependency by connecting the vessel directly to the port's electrical grid. In everyday usage the term overlaps with cold ironing and Onshore Power Supply (OPS), though strictly it refers to the electricity supply as a service – as opposed to the full technical infrastructure system covered by the OPS designation. For port operators, shore power is a primary lever for cutting emissions at berth.
